We got to the Charlotte airport around 2:45 PM Sunday, May 18. We eventually met up with the rest of the China Catawba Ten. Here's the cast of characters:

Me
Geoff - my hubby
Jack - Dr. John Green, the professor running this trip.
George - former Catawba alumnus
Alicia - student in the evening school (like me)
Robert - former Catawba alumnus
Kyle - Day student
Sheri - just graduated from day program
Brad - current day student, jock, will eat anything
Angelica - current day student, turned vegetarian one week prior to the trip

(evening students tend to be older, day students are typical college age)

We flew. And flew and flew. And flew and flew.

The flight from Charlotte to Dallas was an hour late taking off. No one minded too badly, as we had spent some time in the airport bar and were happy and excited to be going on the trip. The problem was that we had to meet a connecting flight from Dallas to Los Angeles, and there was an hour layover in between flights. So when we got to Dallas, they took us off the plane, walked us across the tarmac to our connecting flight, which waited for five minutes for us. Except Alicia had been asleep, and didn't hear that announcement and went into the terminal, but they got her on the plane.

The Dallas to Los Angeles leg had the rudest flight attendant ever on it. Kyle had to put his laptop under his seat, as all the luggage compartments were full. It stuck out 1" from under his seat. She told him he would have to check it. He replied that it had all of his medications in it, and he couldn't check it (moot point anyway because the plane was being pushed back for take off). She replied that "she went to work to get away from teenagers". His response was that he was 22. She stowed his bag where the flight attendants keep their own bags, as there was room.

Once we got to LA, we had to leave the domestic terminal, go outside and walk to the international terminal. Everyone went through security but Geoff and me, we decided to stop and eat, as they had about 10 different restaurant before security. We had some awesome Tex/Mex. We went through security and still had a bit of a layover, so we went to the terminal, which was under construction and had no air conditioning and sat there for 1.5 hours. We then boarded our 747 to Hong Kong through Cathay Pacific Airlines.

Cathay Pacific was awesome. Even in coach, we had tv screens on the back of the seat in front of us where we could watch movies, tv shows, play games, listen to music, all built into the price of the ticket. They fed us a very nice late supper, sandwiches during the middle of the flight, and a nice breakfast before we landed in Hong Kong. The staff was nothing but extremely courteous and helpful. All in all, it was the best flight we had had all day.

And then we landed in Hong Kong on a rainy morning and met our guide, Calvin.

Well, yesterday Mom and I went to the spa (for some reason, I think of the movie Amadeus when I say spa) and had their day of beauty. We each got a facial, massage, manicure, pedicure, and lunch. It was very lovely. We decided we needed to do that more often. I know I tend to be so busy that I hardly ever take time for myself. I feel very relaxed today.

Today we hung pictures that I had gotten from my Nanna's house. Most are family photos, but it really made a difference in the house having pictures on the wall. It feels good.

Geoff is going on the China trip with me. That is going to be fun. He is eligible because he is my spouse, so this will kind of be a belated honeymoon. We never really had one...

I will probably write more tomorrow, but for now I am going to watch some mind numbing TV...

Well, my college is taking a trip to China May 19, 2008 through June 1, 2008. The tour starts in Beijing, then to Xi'an, then to Shanghai, then to Shenzhen, to Hong Kong. Geoff and I talked about it this weekend, and I am going. I just signed up tonight. Eeeek! You can see the full itinerary here. I am very geeked at this point. Geeked, I tell you!
